Who Wrote the Book of Life?: A History of the Genetic Code (Writing Science)By Lily Kay

This is a detailed history of one of the most important and dramatic episodes in modern science, recounted from the novel vantage point of the dawn of the information age and its impact on representations of nature, heredity, and society. Drawing on archives, published sources, and interviews, the author situates work on the genetic code (1953-70) within the history of life science, the rise of communication technosciences (cybernetics, information theory, and computers), the intersection of molecular biology with cryptanalysis and linguistics, and the social history of postwar Europe and the United States.

Kay draws out the historical specificity in the process by which the central biological problem of DNA-based protein synthesis came to be metaphorically represented as an information code and a writing technology—and consequently as a “book of life.” This molecular writing and reading is part of the cultural production of the Nuclear Age, its power amplified by the centuries-old theistic resonance of the “book of life” metaphor. Yet, as the author points out, these are just metaphors: analogies, not ontologies. Necessary and productive as they have been, they have their epistemological limitations. Deploying analyses of language, cryptology, and information theory, the author persuasively argues that, technically speaking, the genetic code is not a code, DNA is not a language, and the genome is not an information system (objections voiced by experts as early as the 1950s).

Thus her historical reconstruction and analyses also serve as a critique of the new genomic biopower. Genomic textuality has become a fact of life, a metaphor literalized, she claims, as human genome projects promise new levels of control over life through the meta-level of information: control of the word (the DNA sequences) and its editing and rewriting. But the author shows how the humbling limits of these scriptural metaphors also pose a challenge to the textual and material mastery of the genomic “book of life.”

"[Who Wrote the Book of Life] offers a convincing and historically rich analysis of the origins and ongoing negotiations involved in the production of the genetic code. . . . Kay is doing the work of mapping cultural shifts through tracing discursive circles of influence—not an easy task. The book has many strengths."—Canadian Journal of Communication

"Who Wrote the Book of Life? is, in general, carefully researched and technically accurate. It is a veritable treasure trove of quotations, citations and interesting information relating to its historical period."—American Scientist

"The entire book is fascinating and well written, unfolding more as a grand epic of the ways in which scientists work and think, rather than as a standard philosophical or historical treatise. The book is also an invaluable resource due to its exhaustive notes and reference sections. Highly recommended for all interested readers, undergraduates and up."—Choice

The Triumph of PoliticsBy George Philip, Francisco Panizza

The Triumph of Politics offers a comparative and historical interpretation of Venezuela's Chavez, Bolivia's Morales and Ecuador's Correa - South America's most prominent ‘21st century socialists'. It argues that the claims of these 21st century socialists should be taken seriously even though not necessarily at face value.

The authors show how the consensual market oriented policymaking that characterized almost all of South America in the 1990s has now given way to something quite different. Polarization and intense political conflict have returned to much of the region. Although the Left has not always been the beneficiary of this changed pattern, the ‘21st century' governments of Chavez, Morales and Correa have been agenda setters. The questions raised by their emergence, style of governance and policy orientations resonate across Latin America and beyond. It is likely that the kind of politics with which they have been associated will be influential in the region for quite some time to come.

Review

"An immense contribution to understanding what is most distinctive about the rise of the new left in the region."
European Review of Latin American and Carribean Studies

"Brings the region's leftist politics into a fresh and serious light. A middle ground for a more objective assessment of socialist politics in Latin America was missing - until now."
Global Journal

"Philip and Panizza's highly accessible opus takes a far more nuanced approach to the question of plebiscitary democracy than do US political scientists."
International Affairs

"In their highly detailed and perceptive work of comparative political science, Philip and Panizza make it clear that it is time to begin thinking seriously about a democratic future that looks nothing like we once thought it would."
The European Legacy

"This book carefully dissects the politics and policies of the three most prominent radical regimes in Latin America. It is informative, perceptive and balanced and makes a major contribution to the debate on the nature of the Left in Latin America."
Alan Angell, St Antony's College, Oxford

"George Philip and Francisco Panizza are to be congratulated on writing this timely and much needed analysis of contemporary Latin American politics. With their focus on the '21st century socialism' of Chavez, Morales and Correa, the authors locate the return of populism, economic nationalism and anti-imperialism within the history of the region and within a comparative overview of the 'Pink Tide' of left-of-centre governments of recent decades. This book will be essential reading for all those interested in radical democratic politics."
Maxine Molyneux, Institute for the Study of the Americas, University of London

I have used sign language recreationally for five years now. One of the main problems I used to have with books for instruction was the lack (or shortage) of exercises for "receiving" (or reading) sign language. This book is an excellent source of "receiving exercises" for new students of sign language to get used to interpreting signs from other people BEFORE actually being placed in that situation with real people. I have found that this greatly reduces the stress of initial experiences with receiving sign language from others. This is especially important since receiving is HALF of any type of communication. Of course, this book is also an excellent instructional resource for learning how to sign to other people effectively. Therefore, I highly recommend this book whether it is used in a class or by an individual!

This was purchased to be used in a beginning signing course. I've looked at, and purchased, several other signing books, but this book is the best. Great way to start to learn a new language.

This book contains clear illustrations and thorough descriptions. Designed by category, it's easy to find related signs and learn these together, or to search through the index alphabetically for something specific. A wonderful attribute is the layout of six sections per page, making it easy to simply photocopy onto cardstock or construction paper and have ready made flash cards or cards for a memory or go fish game

This is a great resource with a ton of signs in it organized by topic. It is not to be used alone, but makes a great supplement to an ASL course. ASL has regional "dialects" and some of the signs in this book are not used where I live, so you really need the guidance of a fluent signer (preferably someone who lives in the Deaf community and communicates in ASL on a regular basis). It uses standard pictures which are usually simple enough to understand. All in all, it was a great purchase and is a great addition to my ASL "library".

My family is trying to learn ASL on their own. And we''ve gotten several books, all better than adequate. But this is the best on their list. They especially like the way the author illustrates signing. It is easier for them to follow and copy than any of the other books we've gotten so far. The two books they have by Mickey Flodin are the ones they keep going back to.

I purchased this because we learned our four year old granddaughter is profoundly deaf. She has rapidly picked up signing. I want to be able to communicate with her. This book was highly recommended by one of her therapists.

I'm a retired high school teacher, and decided to enroll in the Senior Citizen Center in my neighborhood. One of the classes offered was Sign Language. There was a required text, but I needed a supplemental workbook, and this served the purpose. I'm in my second year, and doing quite well in the class. This was a great learning tool. ...and the price was the best part. I paid less than 10% of the original price, and was delivered within a week of purchase. I told my other classmates about the great buy, and they also ordered the book. We are having fun learning Sign Language. Thanks AMAZON!

Excellent book, used to tutor and teach for many years.
