Harmony Korine: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers Series)From University Press of Mississippi

Harmony Korine: Interviews tracks filmmaker Korine’s stunning rise, fall, and rise again through his own evolving voice. Bringing together interviews collected from over two decades, this unique chronicle includes rare interviews unavailable in print for years and an extensive, new conversation recorded at the filmmaker’s home in Nashville.

After more than twenty years, Harmony Korine (b. 1973) remains one of the most prominent and yet subversive filmmakers in America. Ever since his entry into the independent film scene as the irrepressible prodigy who wrote the screenplay for Larry Clark’s Kids in 1992, Korine has retained his stature as the ultimate cinematic provocateur. He both intelligently observes modern social milieus and simultaneously thumbs his nose at them. Now approaching middle age, and more influential than ever, Korine remains intentionally sensationalistic and ceaselessly creative.

He parlayed the success of Kids into directing the dreamy portrait of neglect, Gummo, two years later. With his audacious 1999 digital video drama Julien Donkey-Boy, Korine continued to demonstrate a penchant for fusing experimental, subversive interests with lyrical narrative techniques. Surviving an early career burnout, he resurfaced with a trifecta of insightful works that built on his earlier aesthetic leanings: a surprisingly delicate rumination on identity (Mister Lonely), a gritty quasi-diary film (Trash Humpers), and a blistering portrait of American hedonism (Spring Breakers), which yielded significant commercial success. Throughout his career he has also continued as a mixed-media artist whose fields included music videos, paintings, photography, publishing, songwriting, and performance art.

Many say that this is the weakest book of the Reconkers series, but I don’t agree. The first book was best, the second was the weakest, this landed somewhere in the middle. If you don’t agree though let me just say that being the WEAKEST novel doesn’t nessacarily mean it is the worst one of the series. This story was built on action, characters and setting. It was not at all a plot-driven story, rather it was the investment I had in the characters that kept me reading. The reason this book was the weakest of the series (I call it finale syndrome) was because it relied on plot when the other books didn’t. Instead of blissfully fluffing together a fast-paced adventure, we needed logical closure, and that’s where Calamity fell flat. The plot was always a bit shaky, and it was most noticeable in this book. It was always VERY far fetched - but hey that’s why we sci-fi and fantasy lovers read things like that don’t we? Anyway, it had to end somehow, and although the ending was confusing and stark in contrast to the rest of the series (easy to follow and fun) this required investment in the actual plot. I thought the ending was bizarre because it opened up the door for future books, or did it? It’s hard to tell and it didn’t give us complete resolution. The book was good, very Good in fact, but because it suffered such a bad case of Finale Syndrome, it can only get four stars in my opinion.

Like most great series I’ve read, I’m sad to see that the Reckoners series is over. Brandon Sanderson did not disappoint with the conclusion to the series, Calamity. In it, we find David, Megan and who’s left of the Reckoners team banding together to try to bring Prof back from the darkness of having embraced becoming an Epic. Megan did it (or is trying), so why can’t they do it for Prof, too? After they accomplish that plan, next they hope to destroy Calamity. But it is easier said than done, and more Epics and danger are ready to stand in their way.I’ve been told that the first book is being optioned for a movie, and I could not be more excited. Reading this series is akin to watching a Marvel movie. It has super-villains pitted against the heroes/Reckoners, so a lot of fighting and action occurring, with displays of supernatural abilities. We also have our main character, David, who is strong, smart, and determined… but also a bit silly and naïve. He provides much needed humor to what can be dark circumstances. There’s also a lot of camaraderie amongst the Reckoners, and chemistry between David and Megan. To me, everything comes together in just great storytelling. I would, and have, recommend this series to people who enjoy YA, action, sci-fi/fantasy, and superheroes with a twist.

David is determined to prove that the Epics can be redeemed. Prof, the most powerful Epic out there, is his target. This was my least favorite of the series by far. I was pretty disappointed as the first book started out so strong. But the ending was very unsatisfying. The beginning and middle of the story was fine, filled with David's hilarious metaphors and fun-snappy language between the Reckoner crew that had me smiling. But then its the climax of the story, and I just felt that it was completely rushed. The idea was there, but the execution was off.

The twists in this novel were inspired and kept me hooked until the very end. My only complaint is that I expected more fromBrandon Sanderson in regards to his "magic system." In his other novels like Mistborn his magic systems usually make logical sense and follow a pre-established set of guidelines. However, the longer this series goes on it seems like the powers, technology, and characters get a bit more thrown together. It seems like Sanderson didn't take the time to develop his characters and world building that are trademark Sanderson. This series seems to merely to be the product of a dinner conversation where one person asked the other "what would the world be like if Superman were a villain?"TLDR; Solid novel. Substandard world building from Brandon Sanderson.

"Calamity" is the third book in "The Reckoners" series, following "Steelheart" and "Firefight". "The Reckoners" series postulates an Earth like our own that has been overshadowed by an astronomical phenomenon that people have called "Calamity". The effect of this is that certain humans have developed super-powers. Unfortunately, this has not turned them into the Justice League. Just the opposite. They've taken over the planet, dividing it into fiefdoms, held according to how powerful their super-power is. And, they rule by fear and ruthlessness. The Reckoners are the human sixth column against the super-beings.This series has well-developed characters and an intricate plot. It has more twists than a pretzel, and it is sometimes hard to figure out who the bad guys are. It is a delightful read, but really needs to be read in order. If this is the first book you have encountered in "The Reckoners" series, look up "Steelheart" and purchase it first.Given that, I highly recommend this book. It is not suitable for young readers due to violence, but I'd consider letting teens over 14 years old read it.

This series as a whole is so so good. This finale was my least favorite of the trilogy only because I felt like the overall conclusion played it a little too safe for my liking. I still however though everything else was top notch. I love how Brandon Sanderson keeps increasing the tension. The world building expanded again as we made Ildithia our new playground for the story. Ildithia was so interesting. I never even would have imagined a town that is constantly shaping and reshaping from salt. It's such a cool concept. All in all I absolutely loved Brandon Sanderson's take on heroes and villains.Steelheart-5/5Firefight-5/5Calamity-4/5Reckoners Trilogy-14/15

Exploratory Programming for the Arts and Humanities (The MIT Press)

Review

Exploratory Programming for the Arts and Humanities provides artists and humanists with privileged access to a highly sophisticated understanding of the concepts and practices that make computer code into such a powerful means of human expression. Nick Montfort is a reassuring guide through this forbidden realm, a master magician who is eager to share his tricks, a fellow humanist/artist who understands computation with an unusual intimacy and historical perspective, and who is bent on demystifying the arcane, celebrating the playful, and generally making the wonders of computation available to a wider range of cultural and creative explorers.―Janet H. Murray, Georgia Tech, author of Hamlet on the Holodeck and Inventing the MediumMontfort has constructed an entirely unique text in the crowded 'how-to-program' genre by focusing on programming as a mode of inquiry and on computation as culture. By infusing multiple programming languages, he presents a broad and balanced introduction to creative computing for humanists and artists. Montfort has deep knowledge and he writes with clarity. I've taught and written about coding and the visual arts for over fifteen years and I learned new things continuously throughout this singular and lucid book.―Casey Reas, Professor, UCLA Design Media ArtsMontfort's new book is not just a textbook for humanists and artists who want to learn to program. It is a guidebook for reflecting on the mode and the means of creation and critique in the digital realm and the profound impact these endeavors have on society.―Tanya E. Clement, School of Information, University of Texas at Austin

A nice way for people with less of a tech background to learn the basics of programming and how computational logic works in practice.

I bought this on the strength of the review by Casey Reas, co-creator of Processing, in which he said that he "learned things continuously" throughout this book. Like Reas, I have been coding as an artist for many years, and based on Reas's review, I expected I would learn a lot more from this book. However, the level is very elementary, and nothing the book teaches you (text processing, data visualization, animation, etc.) is developed to any significant level of depth. As this book is an introductory book on programming, for the arts and humanities, I half-expected this to be the case. However, Reas's review also noted that this book is also an exploration of "computation as culture", so I thought that even if it didn't teach me anything new as a programmer, it would offer some sort of analysis of how coding is situated within culture, how coding is ideological, and reinforces particular dominant ways of seeing the world, and relating to it. It doesn't really carry out any such analysis or critique, however, but functions more as a sort of cheerleader for coding skills - how they can help us all to improve our cognition and give us better tools to analyze and investigate the world. Montfort believes that better coding literacy is empowering, which may be true, but he doesn't offer any kind of critique of how the culture of coding is infiltrating itself into all kinds of different fields, and what effect this is having on the way we see the world and relate to people and things.. As a Professor of Digital Media, Montfort is well-placed to offer this sort of critique, and it would have been most welcome, and a point of difference between this and other "learn to code" books. It was disappointing that it didn't deliver this. It's hard for me to say how good this book is as an introduction to programming for someone who has never written a line of code, as I am not that person. In some areas it seems to go at a very suitable pace, walking the novice programmer through new concepts in a careful and skilful way. In (many) other areas it seems to gloss over complex and difficult concepts in an alarmingly perfunctory way (e.g. the section on objects and classes). In other sections it often simply suggests that the novice coder go and read the Python or Processing documentation to figure out how to, say, work with probability functions, or extend their Processing drawing skills. This is at odds with the generally slow/careful approach of the book, and I can imagine novice coders finding themselves in deep water very quickly as they try to jump into these more complex areas on their own. I have taught courses on creative coding myself, and I know just how carefully new concepts have to be introduced and reinforced so that students don't become lost. In places, it felt like Montfort wanted to cover some of these concepts, but ran out of time or space, and simply advised the reader to "go and teach yourself", which does not seem suitable for a book aimed at novices. The book has a chatty, conversational tone, which, for the most part, works well, but can occasionally become irritating when it becomes bogged down in vague generalities for paragraph after paragraph.I think this book could be greatly improved in the next edition, with some judicious editing, and fleshing out and extending some of the chapters which are too superficial in their treatment. For example, the chapter on statistics and visualization may as well have been left out, as it covers so little, and this is disappointing as the cover illustration of the book promises so much in this area. There is much here which is good and useful (like the general introduction to working with Python) but also much that feels half-finished, perhaps added at the last minute and never fleshed out, to meet a publishing deadline?

I am an English teacher at a state university, and I was given this book by the chair of my department because she wanted me to see if I could develop a programming course for our liberal arts majors. I am not an idiot when it comes to computers; I have done some html/css coding in the past to create my own course websites. I am, however, new to coding itself.I found this book to be in one breath easy to follow, but in another, using advanced terminology and concepts that left me lost, confused, and frustrated. For example, I am not familiar with setting up directories and using the command prompt to navigate them, yet Montfort glosses over these steps (upon which a good deal of his following tasks and examples rely). As a result, I got stuck and began looking for another text that kept the true beginner in mind.I also found Montfort to be long-winded and trying too hard to be funny, which is a huge turn-off for me in a text book that is supposed to be teaching me a skill. I felt bogged down in his wordiness, which frustrated me further because I just wanted to get to what I needed to learn.

Every now and then a well-written and cheerfully-researched book comes along that changes the conversation forever. Suddenly no one is asking whether DDT is harmful or we didn’t do enough to prevent 9/11, they are just discussing what to do about it now and where to start first. This might just be one of those books. With Eager: The surprising secret lives of beavers and why they matter, accomplished author Ben Goldfarb lays out a Michener-esque sweeping look at an America that was burrowed, shaped and watered by beavers. He uses a convincing cast of characters to tell this compelling story – characters as varied as they are persuasive. From the “high-spirited and freckled” fluvial geomorphologist Rebekah Levine in Montana, to the “geyser of colorful catch phrases” Joe Wheaton in Utah, or the fish biologist with the “gentle manner of painting instructor”, Carol Evans of Nevada, each tell their part of a highly relevant ecological drama that we never even realized we were waiting for.I have a lot of favorite parts to this book, but an enduring winner is the unparalleled illumination Ben shines on a pre-settlement America when beavers and their dams were everywhere and complex interlacing streams looked more like ‘a bowl of spaghetti’ than individual channels due to their ubiquitous work – my most stark and unfavorite part is similarly unforgettable – the devastating near apocalyptic impact that the fur trade had in drying our national landscape.Besides introducing the reader to beaver believers from every walk of life all over the country and beyond, and stacking the courtroom with deftly-delivered scientific arguments from every field, Goldfarb is a careful archeologist who unearths historical passages that introduce a new understanding of past figures and their thoughts about a beaver-made country. Like a special lens attached to a telescope, his writing becomes a prism through which beavers shape our past, our present and our future.

For transparency, I've known Ben Goldfarb for the better part of a decade and have enjoyed his journalistic writings about everything from shellfish to Yellowstone. But this book is something else!I have a bachelor's degree in wildlife biology and a PhD in aquatic ecology. I know quite a bit about beaver biology and, when Ben first mentioned he was going to write a book all about beavers, I was pretty skeptical that he could fill 250 pages with beaver information that would be interesting and approachable to a broad audience. And I was dead wrong.Every page is filled with phenomenal information about this crazy critter and is written in a humorous and captivating narrative. This book is unique because it doesn't tease apart the story of the beaver into chapters focused on ecology, evolution, and human-beaver interactions. Rather, Ben has weaved these components together to paint a holistic picture about beavers, illustrating the remarkably diverse interactions between this species' biology and the history of the North American landscape, both geologically and culturally. Perhaps most fascinating is the narrative Ben develops through interviewing all kinds of people from living beaver trappers, landscape managers, and academic scientists - all of whom are compelled in some way by this rodent.I've learned orders of magnitude more about beavers than I ever thought there was to know. If you're interested in American history, geology, natural history, culture, or are just a curious person - this book is for you.

Count me among the newly minted Beaver Believers, thanks to this surprisingly accessible book about a much-misunderstood rodent. Goldfarb, in Eager, tells us relatable stories about the paddle-tailed aquatic engineers, their foes, and friends. Leave it to us humans to come to a new land, claim dominion over its flora and fauna, drive much of it to the brink of extinction, and only later recognize the impact of those brutal acts and seek to rectify them. Although Eager deals primarily with the history, contributions, plight, and attempted restoration of the Castor canadensis (and European cousin Castor fiber), the reader will be reminded of what happens when an invading species (in this case, Man) eradicates a perceived foe then is forced to live with unforeseen consequences that are far greater than the imagined threat. The author, through the use of lively storytelling based on exhaustive research, introduces us to Castor canadensis, its history here in the US and across the pond, its overhunting for English and European hats and coats, which become unfashionable after the beaver population has already been decimated, its attempts to survive only to be regarded as a varmint whose value to rivers, streams, and water is not understood well enough to shield it from farmers' and ranchers' bullets and traps. As with any good story, this one has conflict, desire, greed, altruism, sex, love, death, politics, interesting characters, and a good measure of humor. Not what you'd expect from a book about beavers, is it?I agree with environmentalist and author Bill McKibben who said of Eager, "This witty, engrossing book will be a classic from the day it is published." Eager is timely and timeless - an especially important read today as much of the world deals with drought and seeks solutions to dwindling natural resources, for which the beaver, a keystone species that supports entire biological communities, embodies tremendous potential to aid those who would vanquish it.

I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of this pre-order, and was not disappointed once it arrived. Who knew that beavers played such a critical role in the ecosystem? Ben Goldfarb apparently did, and he conveys his knowledge in a thoroughly entertaining and informative manner. As one beaver said to the other, "Dam, it's good."
