I have a young filly who really is a gem, and behaves very well for her age and temperament. She is a VERY high energy horse, and it seems like she is constantly bouncing off the walls and fidgeting and pawing and chewing and etc. I wanted to take her to a new groundwork and respect level, so I bought this book and the results are instant and amazing! I've been in the horse world for a long time, and I've also been a fan of Clinton Anderson for a long time. This book has the complete explanation and breakdown of the exercises as well as common horse and handler mistakes and how to avoid/ correct them, as well as plenty of real life examples. I've had this book for a week, and I am doing the first two exercises only, and taking it slow. However, my filly is so smart that sometimes I'm shocked by her, and she was doing the first exercise PERFECTLY by the third time I asked her to do it. Now she watches my body language and responds in kind. The 2nd exercise is a piece of cake, as I've already done plenty of rope and whip desensitizing with her, which is IMPORTANT. do not neglect that step. It has already saved my filly from injury at least ten times. I watched her run around her pasture too fast one time, she slipped, fell, slid along the ground and got all four legs stuck through the fence (back when we had no-climb fencing). I was the one trying not to panic, but she very calmly pulled one foot out of the fence at a time, and stood up with a big sigh, shake, and then went over to finish her breakfast. No injuries....so grateful. Desensitizing is so, so necessary. :) She is curious and gets into things you wouldn't even think possible, and because she is used to things all around her, over her, under her, around her legs, and etc, she does not panic. Anyways, this book is PERFECT. it will change and improve your mentality, confidence, and skills, as well as your horse's and also help you both grow in your relationship together as you understand one another more. Definitely recommend this! :) I attached a few photos of her during/after working with her, and one video so everyone can see how fidgety she was. She's still kinda obsessed with chains that she can clang around for whatever reason, but she stands very quietly now, and this is after such a short time.
I am relatively new to the teachings of Clinton Anderson. I stumbled upon him on RDF-TV and was really impressed with the results he gets with his training methods. His techniques are very intuitive horsemanship, but he breaks things down to the simplest steps, making it so easy to comprehend and follow.This book is an extremely easy to follow manual. Not only are you given step-by-step, easy to understand instruction, but you follow two women with spoiled, problem horses. The women give their feedback as they progress through their horses transformation.By following the instruction, you will actually see results from the very first session. I've been using these lessons with two, very high strung horses, and am blown away with the difference I've seen immediately. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is sincerely interested in training, and especially for anyone who needs to "fix" their horse.I purchased the book in the Kindle version and love it. I can drag my iPad mini everywhere - even to the arena!It's a great book by a talented horseman. Well worth reading!
After reading a lot (I mean A LOT) of training books, ground work books, lunging books, and numerous other training style horse books, this is the first one I have ever felt like I could honestly achieve and fully, 100%, utterly and completely understand what the trainer was saying. Clinton Anderson is a God-send. He is quite clearly and simply the best human-to-human communicator I have come across. He is quite clearly also the best human-to-horse communicator I have come across. I understand everything - I mean EVERYTHING about what he says. It is literally 'A Dummy's Guide to Working With Your Horse' because Clinton recognizes that he is mainly a people-trainer instead of a horse-trainer. He understands that he needs to train US to train the horses. That's the breakthrough in this book.I first purchased his other book 'Lessons Well Learned' which was amazing and awe-inspiring to read because he didn't just say 'I'm a natural born horseman' - instead he says 'I wasn't a natural born horseman, I worked hard, I stuffed up and these are the lessons I've learned'. That book sent me on a little bit of 'Clinton Mania' I like to call it, where I went on YouTube and looked up his videos, looked at videos of other people using his method and finally found this book which I ordered a few weeks ago, received five days ago and finished yesterday. It literally is one of those books you can't put down. I have already started going through again and writing notes and tips. I have also started keeping a training diary of all my workouts with my rising 2yo. That way I can review my lesson afterward, compare it with the book, make more notes on what we can improve or work on on our next training session and keep on improving.I have only owned horses for 4 years - and this is my first baby - I have had him for only 9 months. And in the last four or five weeks since I found out about this method, we have improved faster and quicker and with more motivation and respect than we had in the last 8 months before it. Absolutely incredible. If you are someone like me who orders lots of books and really fails to understand part/some/most of the trainer, then you need to buy this book - and no other. No kidding, you probably don't need another book in your library cos this covers all your ground work and riding exercises and makes for a respectful horse which you are proud to take out and show off. Thanks Clinton. You made a believer out of me.
